1. Water-Based Acrylic: The Flexible Shield

Water-based acrylics have become the modern standard for large-scale cladding renovations, particularly for massive industrial units that face high exposure to sunlight.

The Pros:

  • Ultimate Flexibility: Metal cladding panels get incredibly hot in the sun, causing them to physically expand. In the winter, they contract. Acrylic is "thermoplastic" - it acts like a flexible rubber skin that stretches and shrinks with the panels. This flexibility prevents the paint from snapping and flaking off when the building shifts.

  • UV Stability: Acrylic resins are naturally resistant to ultraviolet light. If you are painting a building dark grey, black, or a bold corporate colour, an acrylic coating will lock that pigment in and stop it from turning chalky or fading in the sun.

  • Fast Application: Because it is water-based, it dries quickly (usually touch-dry in a few hours) and has low odor. This makes it ideal for spraying massive surface areas rapidly with minimal downtime.

 

The Cons:

  • Not a Rust Killer: Standard acrylics are fantastic for faded or chalky cladding, but they do not contain heavy anti-corrosive properties. If your metal is actively rusting, you must treat and prime the rust first before applying acrylic.

 

2. Oxide Gloss: The Corrosion-Resistant Armour

Oxide Gloss is a heavy-duty, solvent-based coating that combines the rust-fighting power of an oxide primer with the rock-hard, water-repellent finish of a traditional gloss.

The Pros:

  • Active Rust Inhibition: This is the biggest advantage of Oxide Gloss. It contains anti-corrosive oxide pigments. While you still need to wire-brush away loose, flaky rust, this paint is designed to bite into weathered steel, neutralize mild surface rust, and stop the corrosion cycle in its tracks.

  • The "Mirror" Shield: Oxide Gloss cures to a tight, high-tension shiny finish. When driving rain hits it, the water immediately beads up and rolls off rather than sitting on the surface. This slick finish also makes it much harder for dirt, algae, and bird droppings to stick to your building.

  • Impact Resistance: Solvent-based gloss dries exceptionally hard. It creates a tough outer shell that is highly resistant to scratches, scuffs, and physical impacts.

 

The Cons:

  • Less Flexible: Because it cures so hard, it does not have the same "stretchy" properties as acrylic. On massive, highly flexible metal sheets that warp dramatically in the sun, a rigid gloss can eventually hairline crack over many years.

  • Longer Dry Times: Being an oil/solvent-based product, you will need to allow up to 24 hours between coats, and you must clean your tools with white spirit or thinners.
